Play Ball! One Last Time!

Date:  Saturday, November 16
Time:  2:00 PM

In a game that most likely closed the books on the inaugural season a mixed bag of new rules were employed to eliminate pitch counts (except balls), eliminate singles, and give points for x-tra base hits.  No homers in this game and the final score was:
John:  14
Steve: 5

The Batters were locked in today and with a friendly wind balls were flying out of the park.  A few unamed sources were heard 'muttering' about the favorable right field breeze but there is not a whole lot to it.

Friday, 10-11-13 Results

Honey Creek Field welcomed another Father/Son to the park as John brought his father with him.  While it was his first ever wiffle ball game think: Duck to Water.  Like his son, an amazing fielder who made a variety of circus catchers throughout the evening.  Even went yard, once.

John experiences the yin and yang of baseball  as he broke the home record with his blast to centerfield that landed 126 ft from home plate eclipsing his cousin Dave's 125 ft home run way back in July.  Conversely, John uncharacteristically could only score 1 run in the 3 inning game.

Homers:  Steve (John's Dad) 1, John 1, Steve M. 1 (Grand Slam)

Friday's Scoreboard:

Steve M. 5
Steve (John's Dad) 2
John 1
Rick 0*

*In defense of all the batters we moved the ground single line back to the double line so quite a few hits were 'lost' but it seemed to balance out the scoring pretty nicely.

A couple of homers tonight by none other than our home run leader, John.
Final Score:

Steve 9
John 7
Bill 2
Rich 1
Hardy 0

Observations:
It took a few pitches but Bill was back in the groove after a batter or two.  Had the curve going and plenty of speed.

Sunday, Sept. 22 - A Wild, Wild, Game

The Score Board tells the story.  The game ended with the bases loaded.  The Home Team was 'roughing' up Darrell on the mound and there was talk of a reliever.  Darrell would have no part of it as he intended on 'finishing the job'.  That's exactly what he did when he retired his brother to end the game.

Tuesday, 8-27-13

Good game tonight as David, Darrell, and Mike Lott defeated the Dishman's and myself 7-3.  A couple of mammoth home runs by the winning team.  David has the new record with his tape measure blast to left center.  92' to the home run line and 33' into the field.  125' is the official distance.

Camera wasn't working so no pic's tonight.

Sunday's Game Results

A night to remember for these four players
Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the guys you are playing because you are not going to win every game yet sometimes you can be entertained even if you are on the short end of the score.  Such was the case in this evening's game as the following took place:

  • First no hitter in the history of the Honey Creek Field*
  • First time all 4 batters homered on the same team
  • First time someone hit the flag pole for a  homer

8-15-13 Results

The Lott's were too much for the home team as an error on a routine ground ball in the first inning by the SS ....aka this blogger.... opened the floodgates for 4 unearned runs.  Losing Pitcher Rich Dishman made it known that all 4 were UNEARNED.  Official Scorer agreed with him.

However, the Dishman, played Long Ball with his 2nd homer in 2 games tying him for the Home Run lead at 2 with Steve Meyers.  It was a rocket drive with tailing action to the outfield barrier that actually bounced off the fielders hands and into the seats.  It was then picked up by a youngster from Chelsea who refused to give the ball back.

#2 for the Dish Man

Well, we got 2 innings in before the rains came and come they did!  Almost 3.5" in the water-meter located by the bakehouse in the past 24 hours.  Here are a few pics from Monday's activity including my artist/wife Susan who painted our scoreboard and below is putting the finishing touches on the new Field Sign.
The Local Artist Effect

They can't all be home runs, right?

Jane Petosky and Zach Goldsmith anchor the left side.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie.  Visiting from California Scott Waldon in his first AB in, we'll just say a long time, didn't hit a home run but he did comment to me that his pitching stats on next years bubblegum card would display a 0.00 ERA.  We want you next year, Scott!

8-6-13 - Dishman's Drive

Long Gone!  Not just an Ernieism as this belt over the 97' wall cleared by 16' according the 'Honey-Meter' giving Rich Dishman a 113' home run to his ever building resume and some might say....legend.

Rich gets the high 5 treatment.  No 'silent treatment' at Honey Creek Field.  No sir.

7-30-13 Results

Another Father & Son made their debut at Honey Creek Field joining Russ and Avery.  Mike and Bill played on the same team...father a LHP/LHB and son RHP/RHB gave their team some match up flexibility.  Bill is holding up the 1 run their team scored and you have to give them both credit for smiling in spite of being on the short end of the score.   It was a record turnout for players as we had 8 total which worked out well with 4 on a team.  It will be the custom of the blog to always honor the home run hitters and other special achievements so it is with.....an abundance of modesty that I make the next entry:

July 30th - Next Game

The grass is cut and the field repaired!  New additions to Honey Creek Field this week!  It looks like we are in for a pretty big turnout on Tuesday.  Bring your A Game!

Honey Creek Field Announcement:
The Strike Zone has been lowered 1.5"

Tuesday, July 30th is the next game night.
Game Time:  6:30 PM
Weather:  Spectacular!

Who will evolve into "Legend" status at Honey Creek Field?  The first CG shutout?  Maybe a No Hitter?  Back to Back Home Runs?  Or, maybe someone will go deep from both sides of the plate (think me on this one, ha ha).

Only time will tell.  As we move toward the dog days of August and then to September there will be plenty of games scheduled at Honey Creek Field.  Players will welcome the cooler temperatures.  The winds may change from the Right Handed Batting favorable SW currents to more of a Northern breeze.  Left handed batters will welcome the jet stream out towards Dexter-Ann Arbor Road.

There are more ways to become a Legend, too.  Hit the rose and win a loaf of bread and be a legend....the double whammy prize.  Hit a car on Dexter-Ann Arbor Road and win a bakehouse pizza prepared and delivered to your house by Yours Truly.  So many ways.  So many players.  Legends in the waiting.

Friday, July 12th

UPDATE:  Looks like we have 5-6 so far so Game is On for 6:30 PM.

This diagram shows the reduced field when you are playing 2 vs 2.  At Honey Creek Field we use similar dimensions that are marked by the United States flag in left field and the Scoreboard post in right field

Honey Creek Field Dimensions:

Left Field:  99'
Center Field:  120'
Right Field:  96'

Yes, you could say I gave myself (usually I bat left) a 3' foot edge from that side of the plate.  On the other hand the wind usually blows out to left so that may be the equalizer and then some.

Tuesday Night Wiffle Ball this week!

Tuesday, July 2

Guests:  Rick & Tim
Home:  Dylan & Steve

That's right, Dylan and I rallied for 9 runs in the bottom of the last inning to tie it at 9-9.  Honey Creek Field had it's first home run as I crushed a Rick slider that was in my 'happy zone' into the seats in right centerfield.  No laughing here....it was a dream come true.  Rick had the most acrobatic catch in left field, Tim probably had the best batting average, and Dylan proved he covers a lot of ground on defense while not dropping any fly balls hit his way.  We had a GREAT time!

June 14th - The Equipment

It was a big day for Honey Creek Field.  The grass was cut to a very short 1" height for the first time.  Thank you, Bill P.!!  Kicked it up several notches.  This evening I purchased the wiffle bats, balls, home plate, bases, and a pitchers mound.  They go in tomorrow.  Photo's of it all will be up soon.  8 days to Opening Day!

The grass is cut and the field is taking shape.  Excitement is brewing in the community as more and more wiffle ball players....aka....racquetball players who are playing the second favorite sport and now discovering that wiffle ball will be thriving soon at Honey Creek Field. .......

June 7

Lots of work done on the field this week with a huge thanks to Claire.  Here is an update:

  • The American Flag had too much tension with the wind so it will not be a part of the outfield.  The Flag was too big for the capacity of the 3/4" metal pipe supports.
  • I'm currently shopping for flags and banners that will replace the flag.  Not a problem as there is some great stuff out there.  Meanwhile, Ann's Buddha flag hangs happily on one of the supports.  Thank you, Ann!
  • All the Juniper trees have been planted.  Ten trees ranging in ht. from 1' to 5'!
  • All the pole supports have been planted and anchored.  They will accommodate the scoreboard and the Sign with the name of the field.
  • We picked up an amazing art piece in Grand Haven that is now in right center field.  Pictures soon!
  • The mound and bases are prepped and next week we will add fill dirt and sand.
  • June 22 is the date for the Grand Opening with pizza from the bakehouse.  Tentative start time is 5:00 PM.
  • June 23 is the rain date.

May 30, The Claire Effect

Claire worked extremely hard and diligently transplanting juniper trees to the field today.  Our next door neighbor Bill allowed us to capture a few of his trees.  We used the water from the Honey Creek Stream and then got lucky with a little bit of rain.

The Photo above is Claire at the end of a long day of field work.  Eight trees were transplanted today ranging in height from 1' to 4'.  They are small now but are pretty quick growers once they get established.  Great job, Claire!

This photo looks from LF to Center Field.  You can see the curve of the juniper trees as Honey Creek Field will have a tempting Left Center Field homerun target which will be about 10' shorter than the American Flag portion of the wall.  You're going to have to tag one to get it over Old Glory.
